Property from a Private Collector, Savannah, GA
Description:
Morris Davidson (Rochester, NY, 1898-1979), Abstract Still Life, 1953, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated '53' upper right, depicting an abstract still life in tones of gray, red, orange and blue, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 35 3/4 in. x 37 1/2 in.
Born to Sophia and Harris Davidson, Morris studied art in Baltimore, where he spent much of his childhood, and between 1916 and 1918 at the Art Institute of Chicago. Davidson continued his education in Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1920 when he studied there with George Elmer Browne. He had the opportunity to see the work of twentieth-century modernists in Paris when he went there to study painting in 1923-24, and when he returned to Europe about seven years later. French art would influence the development of his own approach to abstraction upon his return to the US.
Davidson was a teacher as well as a student, having been an instructor in painting and drawing at the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1921-22, at the Art Institute of Chicago, in Rockport, Massachusetts, and elsewhere. From 1935 on, he operated his own successful art schools in Provincetown and New York City. Over the course of his long painting career, Davidson’s work—which began in a representational style—became increasingly abstract. From portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and figure studies, Davidson eventually moved to pure abstraction. (AskArt)
