Description:

John Brett (British, 1831-1902), The Mussel Gatherers, Newquay, Cornwall, O/C, 1888, signed and dated lower right, depicting mussel gatherers along a coastline with ships in the background, the back of the canvas marked 'G. Rowney & Co. London W. Quality F', the stretcher inscribed 'The Mussel Gatherers Newquay Cornwall', in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 21 1/4 in. x 27 1/4 in.

John Brett was known for his landscape, coastal views and maritime and glacier paintings. Brett began his artistic studies in 1854 at the Royal Academy Schools. Inspired by the writings of art critic John Rusken and the artwork of the Pre-Raphaelites Brett developed his detailed, accurate depictions of the natural world. Brett's first major painting, 'The Glacier of Rosenlaui,' 1856, was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art, London and today the painting is the collection of Tate Britain. Another of his monumental works 'The Stonebreaker' completed in 1858 was shown at the Royal Academy and is now in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Brett's paintings can be found in numerous private collections and museums across the globe.

Condition:

Fair condition, craquelure throughout with some lifting, in painting to standing figures scarf and head, along cliff in the background and by date, other small areas, losses to paint in upper left sky.
