Property from a Collector of Russian and European Art
Description:
Anatoly Timofeivich Zverev (Moscow, Russia, 1931-1986), Self Portrait, Oil on Board, unsigned, depicting an abstracted face in tones of yellow, blue, green, and red on a white ground with raised paint texture, in a gilt wood frame. Frame size: 21 in. x 22 1/4 in.
Anatoly Timofeivich Zverev was born in Moscow and studied at the School of Arts and Crafts as well as the Moscow Regional Art School in memory of 1905. Also known as Anatolij Zverev or Anatoly T. Sverev, he is recognized as a prominent figure in Moscow’s nonconformist art movement. Zverev developed a highly expressive style that he referred to as touchism, marked by rapid brushwork and emotional intensity. Zverev participated in apartment exhibitions between 1959 and 1962, which were central to the unofficial art scene in Soviet Russia. He also exhibited internationally, including at the Motte gallery in Paris in 1965.
His work defied the constraints of Socialist Realism and embraced a raw, spontaneous aesthetic that set him apart from his contemporaries. In 1956, Pablo Picasso reportedly described Anatoly Zverev as the “greatest graphic artist in Russia,†a testament to the artist’s striking visual language and technical skill. Zverev’s compositions often balance chaos and control, revealing a deep sensitivity beneath their gestural surfaces. (AskArt)
