Description:
William P. Silva (GA/TN, 1859-1948), Pink Azaleas-Magnolia Gardens, 1931, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated lower right, depicting a garden in bloom, label reading 'Painting by William P. Silva / No. 1161 Size: 8x10 Price: $25.00 Title: Pink Azaleas-Magnolia Gardens / Abbott Silva, Carmel, Calif.' on back, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 15 3/4 in. x 17 3/4 in.Raised in Savannah, Georgia before running the family’s fine China business in Chattanooga, Tennessee, William Posey Silva came to painting later in life. At the age of 48 he left the family business at his wife’s behest and moved to Paris to pursue a career as a painter. He studied at the Academie Julian and exhibited in France before returning to Tennessee. He exhibited successfully in Tennessee, New York and Massachusetts before settling in Carmel, California. He spent the rest of his life creating the Impressionistic landscapes he’s best known for while maintaining his ties with the Southern States Art League. He had a solo exhibition at the Telfair Academy in 1917 and participated in the Charleston Renaissance. His work can be found in many public collections including the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Morris Museum of Art and the Telfair Museums, as well as in private collections.
