Description:

William Littlefield (MA/NY, 1902 - 1969), Tempest, Collage on Board, with impressed initials 'WL' and dated '5/15/64' bottom left, inscribed 'Not an illustration of some generic notion- A. Huxley, photo 5/1/66' and 'William Littlefield, 5/15/64, 8 x 9 collage, elements from T. Leber Cat. of …., Tempest' on verso, in tones of yellow, blue, green, white and black on a red ground with text clipping "A Town Called Tempest", floating in a wood frame. Frame size: 10 1/4 in. x 9 1/4 in.

William Littlefield was an American abstract expressionist. He studied painting at Harvard and graduated in 1924, the same year he moved to Paris to study under Stanley William Hayter. Littlefield returned the United States a few years later and settled in Boston and later Connecticut. In 1932 he was invited to participate in the Whitney Museum's First Biennial. In 1936 Littlefield's work was part of a group exhibition at the. museum of Modern art in New York. His first solo exhibition was at the Grace Horne Galleries in Boston in 1938. During World War II He volunteered to join the U.S. Army and served until 1945 when he was discharged. Today examples of his work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Harvard Art Museums, the Worcester Art Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art New York.
