Description:

William Aiken Walker (NC, 1838-1921), Picking Cotton, Oil on Board, signed lower right, depicting three figures picking cotton in a field with cottages in the distance, with 'Brunk Auctions, Asheville, NC, March 23-24, 2018, 589' tag on verso, in a giltwood frame with artist plaque (Frame size: 10 in. x 16 in.). Together with letter from Anne Cohen DePietro, from the Charleston Renaissance Gallery, Hicklin Galleries, LLC., dated August 30th, 2010, certifying to her knowledge that the work is an original by Walker, and restoration packet comprising photo documentation of the work before restoration treatment. Provenance: Brunk Auctions, 3/23/18, lot 587; Doyle Auctions, Nov. 2011, lot 51, Property from the Estate of Ann Carter Stonesifer, MD.

William Aiken Walker, a South Carolina artist known for his paintings of plantations, cotton fields, African Americans, and dock scenes. Walker’s work is in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, High Museum of Art, Morris Museum of Art, Gibbes Museum of Art, among others.

Measurements: Height: by sight 5 3/4 in. x Width: 11 3/4 in.

Condition:

Good restored condition, inpainting in bottom left quadrant in grass and cotton, and along very edges of board, particularly in bottom right corner.
