Description:
US Fractional Currency Shield, 1866 with Letter from Grinnell Brothers Dated 1931, the gray shield with a total of 39 notes, 11 notes hand-signed, 7 signed Colby-Spinner, and 4 signed Jeffries-Spinner, matted and framed, with letter and envelop taped to the back, dated May 20th, 1931 on 'Grinnell Brothers, Detroit' stationary, addressed to Mr. George H. Keesee, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, VA, 'My Dear Mr. Keesee:- I have recently secured one of the most beautiful shields of fractional currency that I have ever seen. Which contains several specimens of pen signatures, of Colby-Spinner, and Jeffries-Spinner. These shields are very rare and were issued by the treasury department about 1866 and contain specimens of fractional currency od different denominations of the first, second and third issues, including the third issue, second serries, with red backs, also the essay of the third issue, 15 cents, with portrays of grant and Sherman. This latter issue was forbidden by act of congress, April 7th, 1866. Consequently, was never put into circulation. I am sending this shield to you by express prepaid and hope that you will be able to find a place to hang it. Either in your office, the Director's room, I or some other satisfactory place, please accept this with my complements. Condition:
The shield cut and mounted to a shield shaped mat board, mat yellowed, some foxing and discoloration to shield with some bleeding to several signatures.
