Description:

Thornton Utz (FL/TN, 1914-1999), Ducks, Oil on Canvas, unsigned, with artist pamphlet attached to verso, depicting a group of white ducks watching a bird feeder with red cardinal against a lush green background, with linen mat in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 43 1/4 in. x 31 1/2 in.

Thornton Utz was born in 1914 in Memphis, TN. He studied for a brief time at the American Academy of the Arts and first received recognition for his illustrations during the 1940s and 50s when he worked on advertising campaigns for clients such as Coca-Cola, General Electric and Ford Motor Co. His portraits of Princess Grace of Monaco and President Jimmy Carter garnered him international recognition. Utz's work has been displayed at the Air Force Academy in Colorado, the Pentagon and the Smithsonian Intitute in Washingtion.
