Property from the Estate of Sally Pearce, Tybee Artist
Description:
Sally Pearce (Savannah, 20th C), Marsh Landscape, Oil on Board, signed lower right corner, depicting a marsh scene with surrounding flora and central waterway, in a decorative wood frame. Frame size: 31 in. x 34 3/4 in.
Sally Pearce was one of the most respected and loved characters on Tybee Island, located near Savannah, GA. She was well-known as a painter and one of her murals about Tybee's history is installed in the museum on Fort Screven near the lighthouse. Her paintings are hanging in various houses throughout Tybee. Her son, Mallory Pearce, writes: My mother earned her degree in art, specializing in painting in oils and watercolor. She focused on landscapes, painting trees in an impressionist style. When she came to Tybee, she fell in love with the landscape, the ocean, the marsh, the pine tree and especially the live oak. She painted in a thick impasto style, portraying the ocean waves crashing on the beach. She created oak leaves on Spanish moss by applying the oil paint by wire sponges. Her brush style imitated the rough-hewed bark. I was a birdwatcher and drew birds. Mother picked it up and included birds in her landscapes. She also painted on walls. Our house has paintings of birds or trees on the walls. (Mallory Pearce, Savannah Morning News)
