Description:

Louise Nevelson (NY, 1899-1988), Clouds IV, 1984, Painted Wood Wall Sculpture, the lower level with hinges door opening to additional assemblage, with Pace Gallery, New York label verso with artist's name, date and titling. Provenance: purchased from Pace Gallery by Betty Melaver.

Louise Nevelson was a world-renowned sculptor known for her large-scale, wooden sculptures and outdoor installations. Her monochromatic, puzzle-like wooden sculptures are her most recognizable works. Nevelson was trained at the Art Students League before traveling and studying broadly across Europe. Her first solo exhibition was in 1941 and Nevelson continued to exhibit widely over the course of her career, including a showcase in the 31st Venice Biennale. Nevelson was a particularly significant figure in the Feminist art movement of the 1970's. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of many major art institutions around the world, including MOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney, the Tate and many others.
