Description:

Joe Bowler (American, 1928-2017), The Critic, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated '93' lower left, and signed, titled, and dated on verso with 'Sybill/Dawson Fine Art, Carmel California' and 'Tony's Frame Shop' labels on verso, depicting a boy and girl playing in the sand, in a giltwood frame with linen mat. Frame size: 19 in. x 23 in.

Joe Bowler was a New York painter and illustrator who eventually settled in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Bowler apprenticed at Cooper Studios at the start of his career and sold his first illustration to Cosmopolitan at the age of 19. Despite contracting a debilitating case of polio in adulthood that required many years of physical therapy, Bowler returned to illustrating almost immediately and continued working. Bowler was named Artist of the Year by the Artists’ Guild of New York in 1967, inducted into the Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1992 and honored by The Portrait Society of America in 2014.
