Hendrick Adriaan van Rheede tot Drakenstein (Dutch 1636-1691), 4 Floral Engravings, comprising illustrations from the 17th century treaty Hortus Malabaricus of Vietla-caitu, Tsjageri-Nuren, Pandi-pauel, and Padavalam; all framed and matted. Frame size: 20 3/8 in. 23 3/8 in. The Hortus Indicus is the first comprehensive Flora of the East Indies, containing the first illustrations of a great number of tropical and subtropical plants and fruits and one of the first major natural history works to make extensive use of Arabic Botanical nomenclature.
Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Drakenstein was a Dutch military officer and colonial administrator of the Dutch East India Company. Between 1669 and 1676 he served as a governor of Dutch Malabar at Kochi and employed twenty-five people on his book Hortus Malabaricus, describing 740 plants in the region. As Lord of Mydrecht, he also played a role in the governance of the Cape colonies. Many plants such as the vine Entada rheedei are named for him. The standard author abbreviation Rheede is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name.

PAYMENTS. Payments are expected within 7 calendar days of receiving your invoice. You will pay us the total purchase price for a lot by credit card (UP TO $5,000), cash (US currency not to exceed $10,000 in a single or multiple related payments), check, or wire transfer, before the property can be removed. Everard Auctions and Appraisals requires payment by wire transfer, check, ACH or cash (up to $10,000) for jewelry, watches and precious metals for all New and/or International buyers. You must quote your invoice number when making a payment.
A Convenience Fee of approximately 3% will be applied to all US credit card payments, and non US credit cards approximately 4%. No fee will be levied if payment is made by Cash or Check. Please note a flat $15 fee for wire transfers should be included in the amount wired. For all payments made by check, we reserve the right to hold the merchandise for 7 Business days or until cleared or certified funds are provided. The purchaser will be charged $35.00 for each check returned for insufficient funds. Additionally, all payments made after 30 days will be subject to a 1.5% Late Payment Fee which will continue to accrue and compound per each additional 30 day period.
