Property of a Grosse Pointe Estate

Description:

Greek Triptych, The Mother of God of the Unfading Rose with Selected Saints, dated possibly 1782 in Arabic on verso. Inscription on front in Greek lettering gives the names of the saints pictured, alongside abbreviations of "Mother of God" and Jesus Christ. Inscription on verso reads Agaris Fakiri, The Pilgrim [one who venerates], From Mytilene, possibly 1782: February 88. Authentication with Icon specialist Helen Dejean McIldowie-Jenkins concluded that Agaris Fakiri may have been the artist possibly from Mytilene, Greece or created the icon there in the late 18th-century. Central panel depicts an "Unfading Rose" Mother of God motif of the Virgin Mary holding a single closed rosebud. The left wing depicts two bust-length icons of saintly bishops, the Holy Basil and possibly the Holy Athanasios, holding gospel books. Also pictured is St. George on a horse, piercing a dragon. The right wing pictures the Holy Charlambos and the Holy Nicholas paired with St. Demetrios on a black horse spearing an enemy of the faith. Possibly created for private devotions of a family or individual.

Measurements: Height: open 12 1/4 in. x Width: 17 1/2 in.

Condition:

Overall good condition. Wear to wire hinges from use, possible retouching of paint done to the Virgin's face, and worm damage.
