George Van Millett (Missouri/Kansas, 1864-1953), Woman Along a Road with Field, Oil on Canvas, unsigned, depicting a woman walking along a dirt road in a field below a blue sky, in a giltwood frame with artist plaque. George Van Millett was born April 5, 1864 in Kansas City and spent his life painting the people and landscapes of his hometown. Van Millett studied art at the Royal Academy in Munich but returned to Kansas City to set up his personal studio. He was an active advocate for art collections and art education in his city and he served on the Kansas City municipal art commission. During his lifetime, Van Millett painted over 100 portraits of the city’s citizens including R. T. Van Horn, Nathan Scarritt, John C. McCoy, Thomas Swope, U.S. Epperson and William Volker. His landscape paintings capture the spirit of the Midwest and his love for his hometown.
