George Van Millett (Missouri/Kansas, 1864-1953), Roadside Scene with Figures in the Background, Oil on Canvas, unsigned, depicting a road with two figures seated under a tree in the background, in a giltwood frame. George Van Millett was born April 5, 1864 in Kansas City and spent his life painting the people and landscapes of his hometown. Van Millett studied art at the Royal Academy in Munich but returned to Kansas City to set up his personal studio. He was an active advocate for art collections and art education in his city and he served on the Kansas City municipal art commission. During his lifetime, Van Millett painted over 100 portraits of the city’s citizens including R. T. Van Horn, Nathan Scarritt, John C. McCoy, Thomas Swope, U.S. Epperson and William Volker. His landscape paintings capture the spirit of the Midwest and his love for his hometown.

Condition

Good restored condition, relined, craquelure throughout, in need of cleaning, wear and small losses to frame.
