Description:

Durett Stokes (Florida, 20th C), The Fisherman's Skiff, Oil on Board, signed lower right, depicting the moon over water with trees, in a wood frame. Frame size: 23 3/4 in. x 19 5/8 in.

Provenance: Durrett Stokes created this work at the request of Emmett Edward Robinson (1884-1938), who lived in Jacksonville, FL, grandfather of the present owner.

Durett Stokes was an American artist who specialized in landscapes but was also a talented portraitist. Known as a Florida artist, he received his training at the Cincinnati Art Academy under noted artists C.A. Lord, O.W. Beck, L.H. Meakin, L. J. Rebisso, C.J. Barnhorn and Vincent Nowottny. For a while he taught art at the Cedarville College (now University) in Ohio. His works are exhibited in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. His striking portrait of Abarahm Lincoln is based on the famous photograph by Anthony Berger.

Measurements: Height: by sight 19 1/2 in. x Width: 15 1/2 in.

Condition:

Good condition, light wear to frame, small scratch center of lower right quadrant, minor wear and scratches.
