Description:

Durett Stokes (Florida, 20th Century), Pergola, Kinsgsly Ave. Orange park, FL, Oil on Canvas, unsigned, depicting a landscape with pergola and trees, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 33 3/4 in. x 44 in.

Provenance: Durrett Stokes created this work at the request of Emmett Edward Robinson (1884-1938), who lived in Jacksonville, FL, grandfather of the present owner.

Durett Stokes was an American artist who specialized in landscapes but was also a talented portraitist. Known as a Florida artist, he received his training at the Cincinnati Art Academy under noted artists C.A. Lord, O.W. Beck, L.H. Meakin, L. J. Rebisso, C.J. Barnhorn and Vincent Nowottny. For a while he taught art at the Cedarville College (now University) in Ohio. His works are exhibited in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. His striking portrait of Abarahm Lincoln is based on the famous photograph by Anthony Berger.

Measurements: Height: by sight 25 3/4 in. x Width: 35 3/4 in.

Condition:

Good condition, canvas possibly trimmed on bottom edge, small loss to paint in upper right quadrant in center of trees, and a few small areas along upper edge.
