Cleve Gray (American, 1918-2004), Captain Cook, Abstract Color Field, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated '71' lower right, titled 'Captain Cook' on verso, in tones of red, blue, yellow and white, within a thin wood border. Frame size: 69 1/2 in. x 68 3/4 in. Together with 'Cleve Gray: Paintings 1966-1977' Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York.

Cleve Gray was born Cleve Ginsberg on September 22, 1918 in New York, NY. He studied at the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA and later at Princeton University. Gray is known for his monumental abstractions which explore elements of Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, and traditional Chinese scroll painting. Today, Ray's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York among others.
