Description:

Attributed to Francisco Collantes (Spanish, 1599-1656), Flight of Jesus, Mary and Joseph into Egypt, Oil on Canvas, unsigned, depicting Mary, baby Jesus, and Joseph in a landscape with bridge and buildings in the distance, in a wood frame with 'Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, Inc.' inventory label and artist information label on verso. Frame size: 23 1/8 in. x 28 7/8 in.

Francisco Collantes was a Spanish Baroque painter. Collantes was born in Madrid in 1599 and was influenced by the Neapolitan School, Jusepe de Ribera, and Venetian painters of the 16th century. Collantes is known for his landscapes and biblical scenes. His paintings are held in the collections of the Louvre in Paris, the Museo del Prado Museum in Madrid, the Museo de Colonia, the Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, and the Museum of Art at the Rhode Island School of Design, among others.
