Notes from the consignor: The RMS Aquitania was a British ocean liner operated by the Cunard Line between the years 1914 and 1950. Its 36 year service run earned her the distinction of the longest running four funnel ocean liner to ever sail. The RMS Aquitania was designed by Leonard Peskett OBE, who was the Senior naval architect for the Cunard Line and helped design the RMS Mauretania, RMS Lusitania, RMS Aquitania and the RMS Carmania ocean liners. Significantly, the RMS Aquitania was the last surviving four-funnel ocean liner of the 20th century in following to over 450 transatlantic voyages.
Not long after Aquitania entered service, the First World War broke out. The ship was retrofitted into an auxiliary cruiser before more notably becoming part of the war's Dardanelles Campaign - where she was used as a troop transport, armed military cruiser and a hospital ship. The RMS Aquitania carried approx. 60,000 US troops during her nine transatlantic voyages in 1918. The ship extended its service into World War 2, becoming the only major liner to serve in both World Wars. Aquitania carried over 400,000 troops during her span of seaworthiness, besides transporting over 1.2 million paid passengers commercially and traveling over 3 million miles.
An important surviving element of marine archaeological history.
