Description:

Willis Hakim Jones, Jr (GA, b. 1953), Carved Cane with Vine Motifs, signed 'Hakim, Sav. GA. '91', the wood cane carved and painted with black vine motifs and flower bud shaped handle, with typed collectors label near base.

Exhibited: 'Masters of the Walking Stick: Five Savannah Wood Carvers' at the Telfair Museum of Art, November 1998 - February 1999.

Willis Hakim Jones, Jr., a native of Savannah, GA, was introduced to woodcarving at a young age, playing with carved wooden ships his father made while he was at sea. Jones worked for a peroid of time making furniture for a local decorative artist. His carvings draw inspiration from the Savannah tradition of walking sticks, but feature more abstract motifs and imbelishments such as diamonds, spirals, checkerboards, and chain links. Jone's walking sticks were featured in an exhibition at the Telfair Museum of Art from 1998-1999 titled 'Masters of the Walking Stick'.

Condition:

Good condition, some marks and scratches, particularly to base, wear to varnished surface and painted vines.
