Property from a Georgia Private Collector

Description:

Willie Tarver (GA, 1932-2010), Woman Watering Flowers, Paint on Cardboard Tray, signed lower right, depicting a woman watering a potted plant with floral motif and animals against a white background, with painted blue border, verso spray painted.

Willie Tarver, a welder and self-taught folk artist, found his artistic calling late in life. He started making art after spending twenty-five years as a refrigerator repairman which is where he learned to use a welding torch. In the late 50s Tarver made a tombstone for a relative out of concrete. He soon found out about the need for rebar and began sculpting cement figures over scrap metal armatures. Eventually, Tarver stopped working with cement altogether and focused solely on welded armatures and paintings. Willie attributed most of his ideas to Greek mythology, the bible, social struggles, and occasionally his voodoo heritage. Tarver was born in 1932 in Wadley, Georgia. As the son of a sharecropper, his life was influenced by religion, slavery, farm life, and the struggles of the working man. (Roots Up Gallery)
