Vernon Edwards (GA, 1940-1999), Carved and Painted Cane, unsigned, the carved wood crutch form cane painted in tones of red, black, and green.

Vernon A. Edwards was an accomplished craftsman and woodcarver. Edwards was initially exposed to woodworking through his carpenter father. After living and working in various professions in Ohio and Philidelphia, Edwards returned to Pooler, GA where he began to pursue his work full time. His signature works include realistically carved walking sticks resembling snakes, along with walking sticks with human figures, hands, and other motifs. He also carves freestanding sculptures and relief sculptures depicting important African American individuals throughout history. Edwards was featured in an exhibition at the Telfair Museum of Art from 1998-1999 titled 'Masters of the Walking Stick'. Currently, 6 of his woodcarvings are in the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum of Art and he is represented in numerous public and private collections around the country.

Good condition, old marks and scratches, worn on end, old repairs on handle, some age cracks.
