Description:

Vernon Edwards (GA, 1940-1999), Two Carved and Painted Walking Sticks, both initial signed on handles, one painted in stripes of green, black and red with vine motif with rubber foot on end, the other painted with blue vine motif on a dark stain ground (32 1/2 in. long).

Vernon A. Edwards was an accomplished craftsman and woodcarver. Edwards was initially exposed to woodworking through his carpenter father. After living and working in various professions in Ohio and Philidelphia, Edwards returned to Pooler, GA where he began to pursue his work full time. His signature works include realistically carved walking sticks resembling snakes, along with walking sticks with human figures, hands, and other motifs. He also carves freestanding sculptures and relief sculptures depicting important African American individuals throughout history. Edwards was featured in an exhibition at the Telfair Museum of Art from 1998-1999 titled 'Masters of the Walking Stick'. Currently, 6 of his woodcarvings are in the permanent collection of the Telfair Museum of Art and he is represented in numerous public and private collections around the country.

Measurements: Length: of striped cane 35 in.

Condition:

Good condition, some wear, particularly to ends, rubber foot cracking, blue and brown cane with small losses to end and repair to handle.
