Description:

Stephen Wilson Van Schaick (American, 1800–1899), Stolen Sweets, Oil on Canvas on Board, signed lower left, depicting a courting couple seated at a small table with a sleeping older woman on the other side, in a ramshackle cottage interior, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 43 1/2 in. x 58 1/2 in.

The life and artistic career of Van Schaick remains largely unknown. In 1872, like many of his contemporaries, he entered the atelier of Gérôme at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After studiying under Germone, Van Schaick returned to New York and worked primarily as a magazine illustrator and portrait painter.

Measurements: Height: by sight 27 1/2 in. x Width: 42 1/4 in.

Condition:

Overall good restored condition, minor craquelure, scattered small areas of inpainting throughout, inpainting in bottom corners and multiple spots in mid right side in background, possible 1 in. tear in middle of left edge with associated inpainting. Wear and minor losses to edges of frame.
