Description:

Sowatey Adjei, Portrait of a Seated Woman, Pencil Drawing, Ghana, April 1981, signed and dated April 1981 lower right and with label on the back, depicting a seated woman holding a book, matted and framed. Frame size: 30 3/4 in. x 22 1/4 in.

Born in Accra in 1948, Sowatey Adjei was a self-taught artist who developed his style from reading books. Adjei was inspired by the works of American artists such as Leo Sarkisian, Norman Rockwell, Andrews Loomis and John Biggers. He worked in close contact with two renowned Ghanaian artists, Amon Kotei and A.O Bartimeus whose achievements and work influenced his own pencil drawings of Ghanaian village life.

Measurements: Height: by sight 22 5/8 in. x Width: 14 3/8 in.

Condition:

Good condition, not viewed out of frame, some dark stains on left side of work, several visible in skirt and others only in raking light in background. Wear to edges of frame.
