Property from the Estate of Judie Weiss Formerly in the Collection of Moses Weiss, NYC(NY/UK, 1880-1959), Annabelle, Bronze, signed on the back of the head, on a tiered stone base, with letter from Epstein dated July 19th, 1954 "Dear Mr. and Mrs. Moses Weiss, I am very pleased you have my little head of "Annabelle" who is my grandchild. The 2nd child of my daughter Kitty. There is very little I can tell you about her except that she is also the grandchild of Prof. Freud the great psycho analyst, and so is greatly related. She lives with me and is really a most delightful child and I can add that I worked from her with much pleasure. I am hoping to visit the States next Spring when I will bring over my great group for Philadelphians of which I imagine my brother Irving has spoken. I am very sincerely yours, Jacob Epstein", and with two books Epstein an Autobiography, E.P. Dutton and Company, Inc., 1955 and Contemporary British Artists: Jacob Epstein, General Editor: Albert Rutherston, Ernest Benn, LTD, 1925, with newspaper articles from the 1950's. Size with base: 9 1/2 in. x 6 1/2 in. D. 7 in. Sir Jacob Epstein was an American-British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. He was born in the United States, and moved to Europe in 1902, becoming a British subject in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged ideas on what was appropriate subject matter for public artworks. He also made paintings and drawings, and often exhibited his work. (tate.org)
