Description:

Shirley M. Cole (NY, 20th/21st C), Four Paintings, comprising a paining of a woman with beaded hat and hair, signed lower right, a portrait of a man with colorful patterned shirt and hat, signed and dated 2000 along left side, a portrait of a frowning clown, signed and dated 2000 right edge, and a portrait of a clown against a yellow background, signed and dated 2000 lower left, all matted and framed.

Cole was born in Chicago and moved to Brooklyn with her family at age 12. A self-taught artist, she began painting in the 1980s and was an active member of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Artist Alliance in Brooklyn, exhibiting her work at various New York galleries and art fairs. Cole's work, which is created from a combinations of watercolor, gouache and poster paint, radiates with color and energy. Her mixed media paintings bear the occasional influence of artistic styles ranging from Cubism to Surrealism, yet they retain their own distinctive style. (savannahmorningnews.com)
