Description:

Rodolfo Nieto (Mexico/France, 1936-1985), No. 114, Oil on Canvas, 1961, signed lower left and further signed and dated 'Nieto, 1961-114' on the reverse, depicting abstracted shapes in tones of maroon, green, orange and chartreuse, in a slim giltwood frame. Frame size: 29 3/8 in. x 37 in.

Provenance: Purchased from Galerie de France, Paris, 1965.

Rodolfo Nieto was a Mexican painter of the Oaxacan school. Nieto studied at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado in Mexico City where he apprenticed under Diego Rivera. He had his first solo exhibition in 1959. While living and working abroad in Paris, Nieto was exposed to the work of Edward Munch and experimented in printmaking. He made deep ties in the Parisian artworld and worked alongside his friend and artistic influence Rufino Tamayo. He won the prize for painting at the Biennale de Paris in both 1963 and 1968. His work was not as well-received in his home country, but he worked obsessively alongside his wife before focusing on the Mexican tradition of skull art with a series of Calaveras paintings. Mexico City's Palacio de Cultura Banamex hosted a retrospective of Nieto’s work titled Imágenes latentes in 2010.
