Description:

Pol Bury (Belgium/France, 1922-2005), Third Avenue El, New York City, Oil on Canvas, 1965, with artist's name and title on the rear stretcher 'De La Battery a Central Park Etat, 1965', part of Pol Bury Cinetisation Exhibition that closed March 12, 1966 at LeFebre Gallery, 47 East 77th St. Frame size: 44 in. x 63 1/2 in.

Pol Bury was a Belgian artist involved with the CoBrA group. He is primarily known for his kinetic sculptures, though he also produced collages and paintings. Born on April 26, 1922 in La Louvière, Belgium, Bury studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Mons from 1938 to 1939, where he became influenced by the work of René Magritte and Yves Tanguy. In 1952, after seeing the mobile sculptures of Alexander Calder for the first time, Bury began creating motor-propelled weathervane-like sculptures. In the late 1960s, the artist created his first public work, a fountain on the campus of the University of Iowa Museum of Art in Iowa City. Bury died on September 28, 2005 in Paris, France. In 2017, BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels opened “Pol Bury Time in Motion”, a show which comprehensively traces the trajectory of his career, from Surrealist paintings to international acclaim. Today, his works are held in the collections of Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London. (Artnet.com)
