Description:

Philippe Halsman (1906-1979), Albert Einstein, Silver Gelatin Print, 1947, known to be printed prior to 1963 but could be as early as 1947 (print does not fluoresce under blacklight), and later Negative, with stamp on verso 'Copyright by Philippe Halsman' with New York City address that does not include a zip code, indicating that the photo was printed prior to 1963, and signed in white ink on the front. Together with a later negative of print (4 3/4 in. x 3 3/4 in.)

Philippe Halsman was born on May 2, 1906 in Riga, Russian Empire (present-day Latvia). Halsman initially studied electrical engineering in Dresden before moving to Paris, where he established his first photography studio. While in France, Halsman made portraits of Le Corbusier and Marc Chagall, among others. With the help of his friend Albert Einstein, the artist was able to escape Europe after the Nazi invasion of France and immigrate to New York. Settled in New York, Halsman began collaborations with other artists, including Dalí, with whom he created two of his most famous images, 'Dalí Atomicus (1948)' and 'Voluptas Mors (1951)'. His photographs have appeared in a number of publications including Vogue and LIFE. Today, Halsman’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, among others. (Artnet.com)

Condition:

Good vintage condition, some wear to corners, ends slightly curled, lower left corner with slight crease, outer edge with some whitening in background surrounding face.
