Property from a Private Collector, New York City
Description:
Peter Anton (CT, b. 1963), Old Assortment, Mixed Media, 2004, signed and inscribed on verso, the metal surround with 30 wrappers and chocolates at various stages of consumption.
Peter Anton is a contemporary American artist known for his hyper-realistic sculptures of sweets, pastries, vegetables, and meat. His work begins first with eating and studying a new food, so as to familiarize himself with the subject. This is followed by a long process of sculpting, sanding, and painting. "Food was, and continues to be, a strong passion of mine," the artist said. "I also get excited learning how different foods activate passions and emotions in people and the profound connection food has to an individual's memories and personal history. Food is not just about sustaining life." Born in 1963 in New Haven, CT, the artist has gone on to have solo exhibitions at Henri Gallery in Washington, D.C., Hammer Galleries in New York, and Galerie Terminus in Munich. In 2012, his Art Basel Miami installation, SUGAR & GOMORRAH, included a roller coaster that viewers rode through the exhibition, which included his food sculptures, nude models, and ruins of a destroyed city. The artist's work are held in the collections of the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. Anton lives and works in New Haven, CT. (Artnet.com)
