Description:

Oscar Pinckney Wetherington (GA/SC, 1921-1997), Marsh Scene, 1963, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated lower right, depicting a marsh scene with a large oak tree in the foreground and small row boat, in a wood frame. Frame size: 27 in. x 33 in.

Born in Savannah, Georgia in 1921,Wetherington moved to Orangeburg, South Carolina as a young child. His passion for the arts was well underway by the tender age of 10, and he began honing his talent as a Southern watercolor and acrylic painter. After World War II, he graduated from the California School of Arts and Crafts in La Jolla, and he remained in Southern California and began teaching painting. In his forties he returned to South Carolina and worked as an illustrator and graphic artist for various advertising agencies, and by 1965, he designed his most recognized work of art, the University of South Carolina's Fighting Gamecock emblem. Wetherington retired from the advertising world in his early 50s and dedicated the remainder of his life to fine art painting, and opened his own gallery.

Good condition, some discoloration to right edge.
