Property of Barron Rachman, SC and NY
Description:
Louis Stettner (1922-2016), La Petite Fille aux Manège, 1951, Silver Gelatin, signed, titled and dated verso, printed by Louis Stettner c. 1970, with embossed 'Louis Stettner' stamp lower right corner, depicting a girl on a carousel, unframed.
Provenance: Photographer Barron Rachman worked for Louis Stettner from 1988-1990 assisting him in producing his work. At that time, Stettner offered him either an hourly wage or one signed photograph per month. Rachman opted for a signed print of Stettner’s work every month and that is what is being offered here.
Louis Stettner was born in Brooklyn in 1922 and began working as a photographer in the 1930s. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II before moving to Paris in 1947. There, he studied at the Institute des Hautes Études Cinématographiques, became friends with photographer Brassaï. Stettner's photography melded the boldness of American street photography with the softer humanism characteristic of his Paris contemporaries. For the rest of his life, he traveled between New York and Paris constantly finding new inspiration in that geographical duality. From thoughtful images of rush-hour commuters to tranquil observations of daily routines, this thematic retrospective displays the remarkable breadth of Stettner’s work. (sfmoma.org)
