Property from a Savannah, GA Estate

Description:

Lila M. Cabaniss (Savannah, 1874-1969), Forsyth Fountain, Watercolor, signed lower left depicting figures in front of Forsyth Park Fountain, matted and in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 33 in. x 30 in.

Lila Marguerite Cabaniss (1875-1969) was a high school English teacher and art teacher whose career spanned from 1892 to 1947. She worked to bring art into the public school curriculum in Savannah, becoming the first full-time art teacher in the public schools in 1927. She was also a founding member of the Savannah Art Club. She studied at the Art Students League, Columbia and Syracuse Universities in New York before returning to Savannah. Cabaniss widely exhibited her work at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Southern States Art League. (GeorgiaHistoricalSociety.com)
