Description:

Karl Staudinger (Austrian, 1874-1967), Untitled, Oil on Canvasboard, signed lower left, depicting figures along a street. Frame size: 17 3/8 in. x 16 3/8 in.

Born in Austria-Hungary in 1874, Karl Staudinger was an Austrian/German painter, graphic artist, and art teacher. He began his artistic training as a paper technician and lithographer before attending Heinrich Knirrs private painting school in Munich in 1892. Staudinger later studied under Franz von Stuck at the Munich Art Academy. His work attracted the attention of the Duke of Saxony-Meiningen, Georg II, who made him director of the Sonneberg Industrial School in 1912. Until the beginning of WWI, he taught drawing, painting and anatomy. After the war he went to Colombia and took over the management of the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in San José de Cúcuta between 1929 and 1933. In 1933 he returned to Sonneberg and was appointed professor and later as director until 1937, when he resigned the position and began working as a freelance book illustrator and artist until 1962. Condition:

Good restored condition, the canvasboard is now laid down on wood board, both appear to be cut, some surface dirt on shirts in foreground that could be cleaned, some craquelure, two horizontal inpainting lines across lower figure and above middle figures, other areas of inpainting probably due to craquelure.
