Description:

Josselin Bodley (British, 1893-1974), Chapel on the Nivelle, Oil on Canvas, signed lower right, with exhibition label 'Carnegie institute Pittsburg, PA' with artist, title, and owner information on verso, depicting a chapel along a river with bridge, in a giltwood frame with metal artist and title plaque. Frame size: 23 in. x 21 in.

Josselin Bodley was born in 1893 to a prestigious family, the son of historian JEC Bodley a friend of Oscar Wilde's at Balliol College, Oxford. After completed his education at Eton College, Bodley left for Paris where his experiences defined his artistic style. Bodley's work in the 1920's reflect his interest and exposure to the Post Impressionism, Cubism and Surrealism. During the 1930s, he was represented by multiple prestigious galleries, including Bernheim Jeune in Paris who held five exhibitions of his work between 1928 and 1934, by Leicester Galleries in London with whom he exhibited alongside Henry Moore in 1933, 1935 and 1937, by Marie Harriman Gallery in New York and by Alfred Flechtheim in Berlin.
