Joseph Rusling Meeker (MI, LA. 1827-1887), Fishing on Scajaquada Creek, Oil on Canvas, Signed 'J.R. Meeker' and dated 'April '51' on back of original canvas (partially visible with the naked eye, see enhanced photos of signature), depicting two figures fishing along a stream in Erie County, New York with waterfall and mill house in the background, with old lot labels on verso, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 33 3/4 in. x 27 3/4 in.
Best known for lush landscapes that convey the sultry serenity of Louisiana bayous, Joseph Rusling Meeker, a New Jersey native, received a superior art education. In 1845, he enrolled at the National Academy of Design. Following his studies, Meeker lived first in Buffalo, New York and then, from 1852 to 1859, was active in Louisville, Kentucky, teaching at a local academy and exhibiting his landscape work. Meeker’s work was shown in the Western Academy’s first exhibition in 1860. Today his paintings can be found in many notable museum collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, Historic New Orleans Collection, Louisiana State Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, Montgomery Museum of Art, Morris Museum of Art and Ogden Museum of Southern Art.
