Description:
Johnny Mercer (GA/NY 1909-1976), Woman Walking in the Rain, Watercolor, 1948, signed 'J. Mercer' and dated '48' lower right, watercolor depicting a woman walking under an umbrella through a rainy park, with linen surround and in a wood frame. Frame size: 21 3/8 in. x 26 5/8 in.Johnny Mercer was an American singer-songwriter and a co-founder of Capitol Records. Mercer was born in Savannah, Georgia where his first job was sweeping floors at Leopold’s Ice Cream. He was educated in Virginia before moving to New York to establish his career. He wrote and composed music for Broadway and movies in addition to running the record company and serving as the first President of the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. He is buried in Bonaventure Cemetery.
