Property from the Descendants of Harriet Beecher Stowe
Description:
John Wesley Jarvis (NY, 1780-1840), Elias Mather, Oil on Board, depicting a gentleman in a brown waistcoat and cravat, holding a letter with the artist's signature, in a period giltwood frame. Frame size: 32 3/4 in. x 40 1/4 in. Provenance: Miss Gertrude Robinson Smith, New York, great-granddaughter of the subject (died October 22, 1963); David Beecher Stowe, New Canaan, Connecticut. The painting and its provenance are available in the Frick Research Library. According to the consignor Elias Mather was a wealthy Albany merchant and direct descendent of puritan minister, Richard Mather, who immigrated from Dorchester to Boston in 1635.
John Wesley Jarvis was born in South Shield, England, and was a nephew of theologian John Wesley. Between 1800 and 1820, Jarvis was the leading portrait painter in New York City and at the peak of his success, he was commissioned to paint a series of portraits of the leading military heroes from the War of 1812 for New York City Hall. But reckless financial habits and high living destroyed his fortune and his career, and he died penniless after being paralyzed for several years.
