Jean Claude Roy was born in Rochefort-sur-Mer on the west coast of France in 1948. At the age of sixteen, Jean Claude attended merchant marine training and took his first job as an apprentice electrician on a cable-repair boat. In 1971 he emigrated to Newfoundland and for the next ten years worked as a marine electrician by day and an artist by night. By 1973 he was selling in local galleries and he had his first solo exhibition in 1974. In 1982 he returned to France to establish himself as an artist in France. He maintained his ties with Newfoundland however, and since 1994 he has divided his time between the two. He describes his style as “expressionist-colorist”, working most frequently in oils with a palette knife. (JC Roy Estate)
