Description:

Hill & Adamson (Scotland, fl. 1840-1850) The Misses Grierson, Calotype, c. 1845, calotype by David Octavius Hill (Scottish, 1802–1870) and Robert Adamson (Scottish, 1821–1848), depicting the daughters of the Reverend James Grierson, of Errol, Scotland, with pen inscription 'Photo by D. O. Hill' on verso, mounted. Overall size: 8 in. x 5 3/4 in.

In 1843 painter David Octavius Hill joined engineer Robert Adamson to form Scotland's first photographic studio. During their brief partnership that ended with Adamson's untimely death, Hill & Adamson produced the first substantial body of self-consciously artistic work using the newly invented medium of photography. Overall fair condition, faded, wear and small losses to edges, rubbing along bottom edge of image, tear across girls hands along bottom half of photo, small creases and tears along bottom edge and bottom of left edge, minor foxing, photo possibly trimmed, photo fully mounted.
