George Boynton was born in Pleasant Grove, Wisconsin in 1866. At the age of 14, after showing a precocious artistic talent, he moved to NewYork City to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students’ League. After school, he studied in New York under artists Walter Shirlaw, C.Y. Turner, and J. G. Brown. He was a frequent visitor to the Cragsmoor Art Colony in the Hudson River Valley, NY. He became one of America’s preeminent portrait artists and was nicknamed “the painter laureate of Army and Navy lifeâ€. His paintings are in the permanent collections of military institutions, universities and municipal buildings around the United States, as well as in private collections.
