Description:

Frederick Gutekunst (PA, 1831-1917), Watercolor Embellished Photograph of a Civil War Soldier, signed lower right, watercolor and pencil hand embellished portrait of a Union Civil War soldier, with 'Photograph by F. Gutekunst' gallery label on verso, matted. Mat size: 23 3/4 in. x 19 3/4 in.

Frederick Gutekunst and his gallery was Philadelphia's premier photographic gallery during the Civil War and Gutekunst is known for his images of General Ulysses S. Grant, William Cullen Bryant, Grover Cleveland, William Lloyd Garrison, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William McKinley, Carl Schurz and Walt Whitman. One of his works of a member of the Biddle family Philadelphia can be found currently on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. - on loan from the University of Pennsylvania.

Measurements: Height: by sight 20 in. x Width: 16 3/8 in.

Condition:

Fair condition, some losses to surface, paper toned, foxing, mat burn, rip on top edge, wear and some small losses to edges, staining to edges.
