Description:

Francis Augustus Silva (American, 1835-1886), Early Morning Sailing, Oil on Canvas, signed lower right, depicting sailboats and a rowboat with figures on the water, with remnants of a 'Rau Antiques' label, and framing label on verso, in giltwood frame. Frame size: 23 in. x 31 in.

Provenance: Purchased James Julia, 8/28/07 lot 133 for $47,150

Born in New York, Francis Silva was a second generation Hudson River School painter, who is best known for his many depictions of the Hudson River and along the coastline from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Ann, Massachusetts. He became one of the leading marine painters of the luminist style of the mid to late 19th century, especially known for his brilliant sunsets with atmospheric effects. He set up his studio in New York in 1867 following a brief tour in the military during the Civil War. (askart.com)

Measurements: Height: by sight 11 1/2 in. x Width: 19 1/2 in.

Condition:

Good restored condition, small areas of inpainting along edges, inpainting in central sky above boats, possible repaired tear in center of sky below sun and into central sail boat.
