Description:

Evelyn Metzger (NY/Brazil, 1911-2007), Floral Abstract, Spray Paint on Board, 1969, signed lower left and dated '69, depicting flowers in tones of white, lavender, purple and green, matted and framed. Frame size: 24 1/2 in. x 28 1/2 in. Together with the book 'The Age of Grandeur and a Woman Who Lived it: Artist Evelyn Metzger' by Brett Topping and Nancy G. Heller for The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., 1995.

Evelyn Metzger (1911-2007) was born in New York City into a wealthy real estate family. Her parents were avid art collectors and their connections in the art world exposed Evelyn to many great artworks and artists. As a child, Evelyn Metzger attended the drawing classes of George Bridgman at the Art Students League in New York. After graduation from Vassar College, she studied sculpture with Sally Farnham and painting with George Grosz, Raphael Soyer and Umberto Romano. Metzger was a sculptor and painter who worked in many different styles including cubism, fauvism, impressionism and realism, as well as pioneering the use of spray paint in fine art. She painted in France, Argentina, Mexico and many other places while traveling with her husband. Metzger had over 20 solo exhibitions during her working career. Her works are represented by various museums and institutions: The Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; The Lyman Allyn Museum, New London, CT.; The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; and many others.
