Description:

Edmund Osthaus (Germany/OH, 1858 - 1928), English Setter, Oil on Canvas, signed and dated '1894' lower right, depicting an English Setter with pheasant, with inscription on verso 'Cleaned and Varnished June 1984, Damar Varnish', with printed artist bio and 'H. P. Beckmann Gallery' label on verso, in a painted wood frame. Frame size: 20 in. x 24 in.

Provenance: Frederick Trost by descent to the consignor. Trost and Osthaus were friends and members of the Toledo Tile Club, an artist club formed in 1895. Trost was a photographer and owned Van Loos-Trost Photography Studio.

Edmund Osthaus was a German-American painter and sportsman, known for his paintings of dogs and hunting genre scenes. Osthaus trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf before immigrating to the United States. He settled in Ohio with his family and soon became the chief instructor at the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts, he was later named the director. He later established a studio in Los Angeles. His work is held by the Toledo Museum of Art and is collected by hunters and sportsmen around the world.

Measurements: Height: by sight 14 3/8 in. x Width: 18 3/8 in.

Condition:

Good condition, faint stretcher marks along edges, minor wear to edges of frame.
