Description:

Durett Stokes (FL/MD, 1881-1967), Orange Park, FL, Oil on Canvas, signed lower right and signed, titled, inscribed 'sunset scene of ... Becren boat house where the artist had his studio, given by the artist to Miss Ruth Spencer, later Mrs. James Gurren of Decatur, GA' and dated 1917 on verso, depicting a sunset on a lake with dock and boathouse and a white crane in the foreground, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 17 5/8 in. x 14 5/8 in.

Durett Stokes was an American artist who specialized in landscapes; however, he was also quite skilled in portraiture. Stokes received his training at the Cincinnati Academy under noted artists C.A. Lord, O.W. Beck, L.H. Meakin, L.J. Rebisso, C.J. Barnhorn and Vincent Nowottny. For a while he taught art at the Cedarville College in Ohio. His works are exhibited in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. (askart.com)

Condition:

Overall fair condition, some areas of craquelure, faint horizontal stretcher marks along top and bottom, in need of gentle cleaning.
