David Delong studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1951/1958 and received a B.S. degree in painting from NYU in 1970. Best known for the realism in his motorcycle racing scenes he was also an abstract expressionist as shown in his black and white series of paintings. Delong described them as ‘Baconian in feeling long before (Francis) Bacon was an icon. The highs and lows of the Kennedy years resulted in these negative feelings. Having been a child of the depression, growing up in the Second World War years and the reaching outward in the Fifties only to find all the optimism and promise taken away… the series was a summation of my feelings about the human condition at the time’.
