Provenance: Barron Rachman met master printer Chuck Kelton of Kelton Labs in New York City via his employer, photographer Louis Stettner. Rachman assisted in the production of mural size editioned portfolios of Stettner’s work at Kelton Labs. When he eventually parted ways with Louis Stettner and returned to New York City from Paris, Rachman reached out to Chuck Kelton for a job at his custom black and white photo lab at 32 Union Square East in Manhattan. Rachman did freelance work for Chuck Kelton from 1991-2010. At Kelton Labs Rachman was involved in the production of the work of such photographic artists as Helen Levitt, Lillian Bassman, Danny Lyon, Bruce Davidson, Mary Ellen Mark, etc. At that time, it was not unusual for Chuck Kelton to offer members of the darkroom production team who worked on outputting editioned portfolios of the aforementioned artists, signed prints as payment in kind for services rendered. That is how Rachman acquired signed prints by the above listed photographers many of which are included in this auction.

Danny Lyon is an American documentary photographers of the post-war generation. The son of European emigres, Lyon traveled south to join the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in Selma, Alabama, in 1962. He worked with the civil rights organization for two years and became its first staff photographer, documenting its activities, including sit-ins and marches. In his images Lyon helped publicize the group’s efforts and produced a visual record of a crucial period in the history of the civil rights movement.

One of his fist major projects was published as The Bikeriders (1967), and was based on four years spent on the road as a member of a motorcycle club known as the Chicago Outlaws, from 1963-1967. Lyon described the series as "an attempt to record and glorify the life of the American bikerider," whose golden years were receding as the sixties drew to a close. Lyon’s work is in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, American Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institute, the J. Paul Getty Museum and many other public institutions. Lyon lives and works in New Mexico. (ethertongallery.com)
